Early curran stuff, U668.2 The battle of Fertas between the Ulaid and the Cruithin,(Currans) in which Cathusach son of Luirgéne fell. M 706.2 Cucuaran,ME GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT & SO ON GRANPAPPY & King of the Cruithni and of Ulidia, was killed by Finnchu hUa Ronain. GREAT GREAT  GRANNYS TUMMELTY LINK HERE  M787.8 Tomaltach, son of Innreachtach, King of Ulidia, was slain by Eochaidh, son of Fiachna. The Curran name, and its variations, are popular throughout Ireland, most particularly in county Donegal in the northern province of Ulster. The name comes from the Gaelic word “corradh” meaning ‘spear’or warrior. It stems further In Irish history than most other irish names, but more famously and bringing you up the years a bit, there was the famous vikeing Olaf Curran, around about 1050 1110, who actually sailed into Carlingford lough, with some of the Carlings them selves  in the long boats, another name for him was Setric, many of his family through out the years after his arrival in Ireland were to follow in his foot steps, he became king of Dublin, he became king of England & while he conqured England in total, he never ever controlled all of Ireland,It wasnt for the want of trying though, for he beheaded the local Newry king Mc Loughlin & Married his wife thier son took on the mothers Mc Loughin name to hold on to the Kingship, this worked for a while but not long. Olaf  Curran & his kin had the longest royal line in Denmark and Norway, the dynastys of vikeing king ships ever.  When he first arrived here In Newry and he really did, for the books say he attacked the abbey of armagh from his base in Newry,It took him a while to cop on to christianity, but he did and finally became a monk himself. He fought at the battle of Clontarrif etc etc.  One of the most famous Irish Currans to ever visit Newry was John Philpot Curran, a barrister and a nationalist, a bit like Hugh curran, and Luke,  Philpot's daughter was engaged to Robert Emmett.   The next was Oliver Curran Newry, oh yeh and thats me, what am i famous for,ask me when i finally pull the last brick down of this friggen brit Castle in Castle street, with some luck it will shut these Yorkshire Bagenals up for good, and a couple of those big shot experts in Newry that have  put more money into him than wed see in 10 life times.  i will tell you in a minute when i get done here telling all these lies about the rest of the family.  Heres a good start its nice to be real famous, Did you know that Eugene Curran Kelly was born on August 23, 1912 in Pittsburgh, PA, the third of five children. Yes, that's Gene Kelly, & he never even asked after me when i was in the states, but im not in the least worried, do i look bovered?
The Newryabbey tower door stone which a Newry museum expert claimed was English and was that of a King of England, she dated it about the 16th cent ,i.e some where between 1500_1650, , not a bad guess for an expert, it is infact from a tower that stood at the bottom of Abbeyhill, (now courtney hill) Its origin dates to 1142 when St Malachy started to build Newrys 2nd Abbey and first convent, this a bigger convent than his first at Bangor.
Ireland is an old country, built on the earliest bones of time, the whole country is a vast archaeological site with millions of recorded & unrecorded  features that could be anything from an interesting stone discovered on a hill, to a forgotten ringfort on a hill opposite..  Resonant with local attachment and deep continuities, it has the worlds most ancient historic landscapes that gives our uniqueIrish  identity.  Newry played a very important role in the ancient times and is recorded by the bards as doing so through out the ages. Newry is a very special place but  during the past 50 years,an intensive wrecking and bulldozing of our ancient towns embankments & medieval building that are irreplaceable & the land marks used by our ancestors are all but  extinct  & while you may be under the illusion that Newry began only 850 years ago you are in for a big supprise.  The Newryabbey was once called the college of Newry, the last time this term was used was in 1456 when Infact the Abbey went under a serious rebuilding scheme & like many others In Ireland at this period was refurbished, many of the building survived after the reformation and indeed some still survive today.  Newry & Mourne say's theres none??  The worst period of destruction for the Abbey was during the Corrys dynasty, when it is believed that this once very famous Abbey was brought to the edge of extinction, they simply got the Newry Abbey's plural mixed up.  This shows you cant all ways believe what you read, especially when much of Newrys past Is now under question , much  was written to decieve & to suit a new English way of life here.  The continuity Is rife still In regard to this same Abbey when you look at the story invented by Belfast expert's to butter over the fabricated horiffic story surrounding the 33 mutilated body's found.
Bangor Sun Dial Cross, circa 1110, St Malachy's foundation. This cross is identical to the one found In the chapel of the blessed virgin of  Newryabbey. So called museum & or castle !! This museum building is actually the chapel of the nine alters.   Thankfully the cross is still, where it belongs. The sands of time.
